they cut it for you so thats good, but is this the kind of glass that is drill-able for a 1" pipe for my 55 gallon tank's external overflow project?

Just remember, If they can cut it without the glass exploding, then you can drill it.. Tempered glass is the glass you don't want to try to cut or drill, you'll end up with it ALL OVER the place!

BTW if your going to drill it, take your time and don't go fast and hard on the piece or you'll crack it.. and if you drop it, DON'T catch it!!

Use plenty of lubricant while drilling also

Use a Dremel with diamond or carbide(slower cut) bit. I did mine with carbide bit. Used a garden hose taped to the tank with a slow flow for lube and cooling. Worked perfectly...the smoothest cut I could have hoped for. If they cut you the glass, then it is not tempered. Cant cut tempered glass. Go slow...took me 45 minutes per 1 1/2 hole in 3/8 glass.

drilling glasss lubricant... NOVAQUA
I use to use the old school method and lubricate with anti-freeze to drill holes in aquariums with diamond bits.
Now I use "Novaqua" ... hey .. it works and is non toxic to the fish! I just drilled a 1.75 hole 1/4 glass using Kordon Novaqua as the lubricant and it worked fantastic. Just thought I'd toss that out on this thread.. later Todd G. |

Glass at Home Depot is only 1/16" thats very thin... Local glass stores have same thing at about the same price... You can get 1/8" or even thicker... .. Much better for what you need

Not only the thickness...be very very carefull with that glass. It's made mostly for windows and doesn't have polished edges. It will be very sharp and could KILL YOU!!!!
....maybe not, but it would hurt. |

LOL!!! Very good point.... anyone working with glass should know the obvious.. I have never drilled glass... But I would think that little glass shavings would be a bad thing also.. I saw a post recently where a guy drilled a tank with Water and fish still in the tank.. Thought that was funny also...
