Skimmer vs Filter
Ahhh yes, finally I find myself delving into the world of Salt water.
And DAM is it complicated. Any way, Ive done a bit of research and asking around. A freind of mine, who keeps marine, told me that if your going to throw youre money into any peice of equipment, it should be the skimmer. He explained that if you have a some big hardcore skimmer then the need for a filter is gone. Why? I asked. He told it like this. A filter is like a proccessor and and a skimmer is like a remover. A filter will merely 'filter out' bad stuff from the water, were as a skimmer actually remove it from the water for good (all the gunk in the collection cup). I guess what he was trying to say was that if i have a good skimmer then it will just remove all the bad stuff and so there fore the filter has no purpose. Plus i guess live rock will help with the bio filtration, am i right? Any way, I was convinced. Can anyone support or reject his 'theory'. |

Its not that complicated... Actually once you have your setup up and cycled, its easier than freshwater cichlids and discus that I used to have.
Having a good skimmer is key, the rest will be biological filtration (live rock and maybe a sand bed if you want) and for further nutrient export a refugium.... just keep some activated carbon and iron based phosphate obsorber (phosban) on had in case of diatom or red slime 'algae' outbreaks. As for the other equipment or dosing kalkwasser... just depends on your calcium load. I prefer dripping kalkwasser for top off water to maintain calcium levels and some alkalinity. I depend on a calcium reactor for some calcium and mostly alkalinity. |

now thats wat i call i fast reply.
this forum looks promising. Hate to be a total newb, but can you explain to me what exactly a refugium is? Last edited by SaM dA MaN; 02/21/2004 at 08:23 PM. |

a small tank or part of your sump where you grow macro algae and have some rock rubble. As the algae grows, it sonsumes nutrients. You harvest (rip out some) the macro to give it a kick in the butt to start growing more.
Your friend is correct. Not only does the filter only filter out the big particles, but a filter holds the gunk, and then the gunk starts to decompose causing elevated nitrates.

What purpose does a refugium have?

From what I know it's used to hold macro algea, which in turn can help prevent bad algeas in the show tank. Others will tell you more.
