Is My Sebae spawning???

Hi Dr. Ron,
last night at 9 pm, my 4 yr old sebae started spewing white milky stuff, not like his usual brown stringy poop, at 30 minutes before lights out. It did it sporadically throughout the night , clouding up the tank, 20 straight minutes at a time, well, at 9 pm tonight, bingo, it starts again, spewing for 20 minutes straight, it looks like its blowing shotguns to my purple tang as he tries to eat it. ha, ha.. and so i snapped a few pics. its funny , could the time change have triggerd this, my lights are on timers, and so yesterday, was the first day of it, or just coincidence? Also, do anenomes spew sperm like that???
Thanks,
Billy

ken did yours do it after the time change, or has it just done it once upon a time? I know some anenomes split to reproduce, but im not sure if they fertilize eggs or not. pretty cool though.

some anemones split, some spawn. Mine zactually did it after my tank started to recover after a big temp spike that killed half the tank

Hi,

All anemones will spawn, if they are capable, and get the right cues.

Speedy, yours is a male and it was spawning. The amount of sperm that it will kick out is, indeed, impressive. Typical anemones spawn from 30% to 50% of their body mass each year.

The cues for spawning vary but typically involve changes in day length or temperature...

hey speedy5200, I have a coral that started doing the same thing yesterday. The only thing I did yesterday was raise the temperature in the tank 2 degrees. My coral is large and the kind that has a blue skeleton when it dies. It has been spewing white stuff from all its polyps since yesterday every so often. A lot comes out, maybe its looking for a girlfriend like yours. Mark

Hi Folks,

First, Mark, your coral sounds like Heliopora, the blue coral, and it does sound like it is spawning.

Second, you both should document such spawning events at The Breeder's Registry, see here.

[thanks] for doing so!!
