Ro/di

I used tap water to cycle my tank about a month ago. My Fuji LR is not fully cured and I have been adding liquid reactor for two weeks. I have not tested for calcium or phosphates. Once a week I have done 5 gal. water changes with salt water from the LFS. The ammonia, nitrites, nitrates are 0. I have some brown alge on the LR and I'm looking for coraline growth. There is a small amount of brown alge on the back of the tank.
Do I need to make my own saltwater with RO/DI. The LFS said I will have to use a buffer for the PH level. Mine currently is 8.2.
I am using RO/DI for tap off during the last two weeks.
Any Help ?

Do you need to? NO.... Should you? Why not. It will be cheaper than the LFS by enough to make it worth while IMO, and more importantly it is a lot easier on your time schedule (unless you like driving to the LFS for water). Also it makes those emergency water changes at 2 am a lot easier than breaking into your LFS to get water

Instant Ocean or any other good salt mix has everything you need to make good salt water, you don't need any additional chemicals IMO.

Roy,
I certainly wouldn't use tap water unless it's a dire emergency. Get the RO/DI system, or at least an RO system. Or, in my case, I have a great LFS with cheap RO water. I don't know how much LR you have in your tank or your depth of DSB but you shouldn't need a buffer for PH. Be careful taking advice from your LFS. You should be able to find endless posts here at RC for practically every subject you'd ever want to know about this hobby. By the way, you want to test for phosphates if you are using tap water because you'll find yourself with an overnight breakout of algea (that will be hard to control) if you're not careful.

i think(along with most reefers) that a ro/di system is as important as most other equipment. its on my "must have" equipment list. its nice to be able to get good water whenever you need it.
