can u add new sand to existing live sand?
is there going to be a cycling period that will affect sps/lps if one trys to add 20lbs of sand over an existing sand bed? i have some areas of my tank (corners mostly) where sand has bare spots and some areas where sand has clumped together due to maybe high cal at one point. the other option is to maybe sift old sand clean but i don't want to stir up a worse problem.

You can add new sand, but I would do so in stages. As you put new sand over old sand, you may kill off some of the bacteria that does rely on oxygen. Just add it a couple of cups at a time, one section of the sand bed at a time.

siphon as much detritus as you can before adding the new sand...whatever gets buried will decompose and add to your trates

Just slowly add a cup a day, scatter it. Disregard the foggy water, it will clear in a matter of hours.
Just the sand flatulating. |
