Hey guys I've got about 10 unidentified things in my tank. Any help would be much appreciated, and maybe some information on the care and growth expectations.
This is a neon green coral with hexagon shaped brown spots: I think it's a kind of mushroom: Some kind of algae good/bad? cool green algae, grows really quick, and the light green color due to air bubbles underneath the leaf: hard to see but an alien colored green algae that grows in the potholes: 6 is a purple algae and 7 is like a red hair algae that is growing in it: coral that has neon green "roads", and light brown flange's that come out during the day: purple with dark purple dots: various algae: The coral I received at a frag swap and the algae were grown (I believe) from a bottle of phyto feast that I added gradually over the last couple of months. I am very curious about the term "algae" as these mostly look like plants. So I may be using the wrong term for everything. Please help identify these, thanks

#6 looks cool - never seen such vivid blue algae... I was guessing it to be a sponge or something. That stuff would be cool in a show fuge...

1- might be Porites. Its a stony coral, which one is anyones guess
2- leather coral aka mushroom leather aka Sarcophyton aka Lobophytum 3- Padina 4- Ulva aka sea lettuce. type of macro algae. 5- probably sponges. maybe tunicates 6- macro algae 7- see 6 8- definitely Hydnophora. thats one you might want to read up on- has some particular traits to be aware of in a reef. 9- cant tell 10- yet another variety of Macro algae

1 - not sure, but I have that as well (was a HH) - it grows more like coralline algae but has polyps like a feather duster (not very fleshy, more hairy)
10- I believe is a type of Dictyota as well (at least the bottom part, the top looks like other types) - I was reading that types of this can be a major nuisance algae. Personally, I regret not removing all those cool looking macro algae in my tank. I suggest taking it out (at least the leafy ones) while you can. |

thanks for all replies And note taken fraggle, i'll probably treat this like a wet zen garden and prune the big leaves every so often.
Yeh, 9 is interesting, as the purple seems to be growing in over the whiter core along the bottom, like covering. Similar to when i cut off a piece of my gsp and the purple covered the white.

Hello,
1) (pic is rather small) not so easy - looks to me most likely as a Montipora venosa. but for me it looks as if there are two different frags - the right one could be something else 2) leather coral - most probably finger 3) padina (for algae see here:http://www.poppe-images.com/images/s...category=algae) 4) a green algae 5) sponge 6) and 7) search at the algae page... 8) Duncanopsammia axifuga (galaxea has smaller polyps) 9) Montipora 10) upper - pic to bad for determination; middle - most probably Sargassum sp; lower - Dictyota sp. (see again algae page) regards Markus |
