storing salt water in laundry room?
I'm thinking about storing my RO/DI and mixed salt water in my laundry room. I wonder if the salt is going to do any damage to my laundry room or clothes that I may hang there once a while.
I'll use some kind of container like Brute with lid on. I'll have a power head and heater in the salt water container. Would I have oxygen issue (lacking) if I keep the led close? Anyone of you doing this? Any problem you have encounter? thanks Last edited by viodea; 01/09/2008 at 09:19 AM. |

My RO/DI and saltwater mixup is located in the laundry room. That is also where the hvac system and hot water heater are located. I have not noticed any problems of any kind. I do have a floor drain there so any spilled water flows to the drain.

Yeah it should be totally fine, as long as you have a lid to keep salt creep from getting onto your appliances, etc.

I would advise not using dryer sheets or perfumed soap. Get Tide Free or the like.

I use a generic trash can with an open top... no kids here either though... Dryer sheets, fabric softener, Tide in all of it's many scents has never been a problem. Honestly I think this is a non issue based on my experience and others I know.
If there were kids around I'd have the top secured for safety and from 3 or 4 years ago when there were a lot of teenagers here, to keep their curiosity from getting the better of them. Tim

Will I have oxygen problem if I seal the containers with lids?
I'll have a heater & power head inside the salt tank. |

viodea,
There are plenty of people that store water and have no oxygen issues...its safe to say its fine to do. I keep mine store in sealed 55 gallon poly drums.

Might want to watch out for the heater sitting on the plastic can / tub for extended periods. I have seen an instance (only one mind you) where the heater shorted in the on position and got really hot and melted the side of a plastic tub.

The key is to keep the containers sealed. There's lots of things that get sprayed in a laundry room, and lots of lint, but neither should be fatal. Another key is to keep the tubs in a area of the room where they will be away from where laundry detergents are stored. I still remember the pictures: A fellow reefer's sump, fuge, and prop system were kept in the basement. The sump was right under the laundry room on the first floor. A full container of laundry detergent fell over, and ran over the floor to the opening where the water supply and waste lines came from the basement. The detergent found the hole, and ran along the plumbing lines, and you guessed it, right down into the sump. The pics of the sump looked like an episode of I love Lucy, but the tanks looked like a Nature Channel's special on coral bleaching.

I would not use an airstone in the can if its anywhere close to appliances or tools, like in a laundry room. The salt WILL get out and eat your equipment alive.
Use a powerhead and your fine.
