Majestic Angel
I know this has covered 1000 times here but I need your opinion. I have been thinking about adding a Majestic angel to my reef and have been researching this on RC. I know some people have had good luck and others...... not so much.
Well, last night I was at my LFS and was talking to the owner and asked him if his was for sale. In the store display tank (FOWLR) they have a 4"-5" Majestic in there for almost 2 years. Eats like a pig with pellets and nori. My question is being that this fish has been eating prepared foods for so long and away from corals this long do you think that it is a good canidate for my reef? Or do you think that it would go on a feeding frenzy on my SPS????? Any thoughts or opinions would be great. Chris |

Tagging along on this. I love the large angels but am terrified of getting one that eats sps.

I dont think it would be a problem with the SPS. Maybe if you have ones that slime a lot, but otherwise, I cant imagine youd see appreciable damage. The important caveat is to feed heavily. Any hungry fish will eventually start to look at think that it previously didnt consider a food source.

I've had one in my reef for a few years. He sometimes picks but never does any noticeable damage. I have zero PE during the day however.

I think conditioning the fish to eating offered foods is one of the keys, keep feeding him well and you'll probably be fine. I have a Majestic, an Emperor, a flame and a Cherub in my tank along with a number of sps's and a couple of lps's. The flame is probably the worst for occaisonal pecking of the sps's, but nothing major. The Majestic ignors every coral, I'd say the Emperor is a little more risky, I've caught that fish picking at the lps's, but never the sps's. I love those angels just as much as the corals, I'd go for it, especially on such a well acclimated fish.

mine still nips certain sps but they seem to go on growth spurts afterwards......little p.e. during lights on time as well..... I would guess in this situation, he'll nip initially, until the food comes steadily enough that he's comfortable. Don't take him out too soon, he'll make you super nervous initially..

I would worry more about expansive LPS and clams than SPS. However, Angels are hit or miss. If you can catch them easily, go for it. If not...
Good luck |

I know this is the SPS forum, but since Mikigo mentioned it, have any of you, particularly with majestics, had any luck keeping them with "expansive" type LPS? I know there was an article in Advanced Aquarist where someone had done it, but that was in a 300g or so tank. I'm curious about trying an angel in my 120, but I'm more LPS dominant, and I have no luck whatsoever catching fish.
