Aquac ev 180

just got the eheim 1262 for my ev180. I can already notice a difference, but I have a few questions:

1) is it better with a 1" injector on this pump?
2) my water level is quite a bit above the black box, with the gate valve wide open; how can I lower it--or should I? Perhaps it's normal on this size pump. should I slap a ball valve on it?
3) can I remove the gate valve (since it's wide open anyways) and place a larger (1") 90 in its place?
4) If I do remove the gate valve, does anyone know off hand what the thread size is on it? I think it's 3/4", but I can't remember.
5) any other suggestions?

Thanks

I used that same skimmer for 3 years with different pumps.

1. Don't know.
2. Strange that the water level is above, are you sure? Did you adjust the air at all? You'd need to close some of the air off. Don't put a ball valve on the pump.
3. I wouldn't do it.
4. It is 1''
5. Play with the air valve, use a flash light to look at the water level in the skimmer. I've used bigger pumps and my water will never reach the top of the black box w/ the gate valve all the way open.

thanks. I have the gate valve all the way open and the air is approximately half way. No need for a flash light, because I can see (even with the air off) that the water level is about 3/8 of an inch up the cylinder. I dont want to choke the pump, but I'm wondering if performance might improve if the water level drops to the top of the black box

is it above or below the water line??

I just have the gate valve on there for now, and it's wide open and an inch above the water line

1) is it better with a 1" injector on this pump?
* It's slightly better than the 3/4" injector, but nothing spectacluar. I'm running mine with a 1" injector.

2) my water level is quite a bit above the black box, with the gate valve wide open; how can I lower it--or should I? Perhaps it's normal on this size pump. should I slap a ball valve on it?
* Don't bother installing a ball valve. I installed one to cut back the flow from my Eheim 1262, but I ended up running it full blast. The water level is about an inch above the black box, but the pump is producing lots of fine bubbles. The more pressure the better, so I try not to hinder it.

3) can I remove the gate valve (since it's wide open anyways) and place a larger (1") 90 in its place?
* You can completely remove it and the water level will drop, but I don't think it'll help you by converting it to a 90. You get alot of water splashing without the gate valve, but the skimmer works even better.

4) If I do remove the gate valve, does anyone know off hand what the thread size is on it? I think it's 3/4", but I can't remember.
* I'm almost certain that it's 1". I wish it was a 1.5" instead.

5) any other suggestions?
Put a hose on the air valve so the other end is far away from the the water. It'll reduce the salt spray that tend to clog it.
