Starting a FOWLR tank
Hey guys,
I'm staring a FOWLR tank and have a few questions. I currently have a 90g reef. Should I get hermits and snails in a FOWLR? The tank is going to be a 92 corner and I'm going to put all the live rock in the center keeping the edges around the tank open. I want the sand to stay clean and the tank to be uncluttered. Thanks |

Should be no problem, depending on what fish you put in there. Some fish (like large wrasses or tiggers) will eat them. The larger hermit crabs do a pretty good job of keeping the sand clean, but will tend to scratch the glass a little with their shells.

I've never found the very large red hermits to scratch the glass. What you need to watch out for is the hermit getting eaten during a molt when their body's are soft. I saw my large red hermit get devoured by my moray while his new shell was drying. It was a pretty sight...

I had five that grew pretty big. They actually took out several turbo snails for their shells. After I added my Lion and Eel, they are gone.

you dont really get inverts for a FOWLR tank unless you know you are going to keep fish like tangs, angels, butterflies, etc

You can keep inverts if you DO NOT have eels, triggers, non reef wrasses.

I have a moderately large (not reef safe) hermit in a BB 120 with two eels, a grouper, puffer and trigger. The hermit is in a 3 inch long shell. I collected it on the NC coast. I was okay with it being eaten, but it's been in there since June.

I keep snails hermits and a cbs in my aggressive tank. It is a good thing to have in there. cbs dosen't get messed with. snails and hermits usually get replaced evry few months. Shellls keep my puffers teeth down and sure they are good eating for my trigger and wrasse.
