that is a loaded question

If you really want to get to the source of the problem...start by telling us what type of water you are using for water changes and top off

The cause is ALMOST always nitrates and / or phosphates.

The source of the nitrates / phosphates could be anything from the water you use to top off to overfeeding.

You can always lower nitrates / phosphates with water changes, assuming you're using good water. You can also add herbivores to eat the algae and/or manually remove much of it. Occasionally, shifts in light spectrum can cause algae to grow faster, so some people will recommend changing bulbs, but without the nutrients it wouldn't be an issue anyway.

well..filtered\bottled can mean different things...do this...test the water for nitrates and phosphates and we'll take it from there

Its most likely the water you are using.

I started my tank with bottle distilled water and I had every type of bad algae in my tank because of it.

Then I finally bought a ro/di unit and all algae is gone
