Flow Rate Through A UV Sterilizer

Well i was just curious as to what kind of GPH flow rate that people are running through there UV sterilizers. And what kind of system do you have it on.Mine is a coralife turbotwist 18 watt on a 210 gallon fowlr. It is on there to mainly control any ick out breaks and i am running 174 GPH through it.Should i up that. This was what i had running on my 55 but is now going on my 210.Here is a chart to tell what is recommended for my uv..

Model

Flow Rate Flow Rate Flow Rate
for Parasites for Algae for Bacteria
9W 55 GPH 121 GPH 253 gph
18W 110 GPH 240 GPH 500 gph
36W 290 GPH 680 GPH 1,550 gph

I would think a 18w UV would need to be on something no larger then a 75-100g tank to do any good. If you are concerned I would sell the 18w & buy a 40+w unit or get 2 more 18w ones & run them in series.

You need such a slow rate that the 18w unit probably wouldn't do anything

I don't normally do this, but I am going to copy and paste information that was written by someone other than myself. I can't make heads or tails out of it, but if you can and it helps you, then it's a good thing.

"Gratzek et al. (1983) reported success in treating Ichthyophthirius multifilis (Ich) using a sterilizer rated at 91,900 microwatts/ second/ centimeter2."
