Reducing skimmer height?

I found a ASM G-5 for a reasonable price and was thinking of buying it. Problem is that my stand allows for a skimmer up to 33" tall(G-5 is 36").

So, in order to try and make it fit I was thinking of shaving off 3" of the collection cup, and make a drain valve and line for the cup to make up for lost skimmate storage. And since a gate valve will be added, I shouldn't have that much of a problem with the skimmer overflowing. Is there any problem I should be aware of before buying it and trying my idea?

THE THING IS IF YOU REMOVE THE 3 INCHES FROM THE COLLECTION CUP REMEBER YOU WILL ALSO BE REMOVING SOME OF THE NECK ALSO. YOU MIGH BE ABLE TO GET AWAY WITH IT BUT WONT YOU HAVE SOME SPATER ON THE TOP WITH OUT THE LID.

I think 3" is kinda pushing it a little.

Seeing that the ASM G-5 has no neck, you will be cutting solely from the top of the cup.

So you will have to shave 3" from the top of the cup, meaning the inner cup will have to be even shorter. It willl not be easy to perform the latter.

My advice is to look for another skimmer, but you can ask loc01 for advice. He helped me trimmed down my skimmer, but mine had a neck and so we trimmed some off the top and some off the bottom.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies.

I was thinking of picking the skimmer up anyways since it is actually a pretty good deal. So when I pick it up I'll see more into what I can do since I only looked at the skimmer for a good 20 seconds. If I don't mod it I'll probably trade or sell it for something that will fit in my stand.

Could you shave 3" from the body of the skimmer where the cone is attached to the body? I believe you can remove the cone from the body of the skimmer and then reasemble it after you made your cut.

The pic you posted finally showed...so yes, I did mean that when shaving the collection cup, that I would shave the plastic from the top of the cup and not the neck.

how do you intend to shave the inner tube though? Since it has to be shorter than the outer one by at least 3/4"-1"

You'll need to shave more than 3" since you need extra room to lift the cup off the skimmer when cleaning.

Theres a good 1/2" to 3/4" of clearance if the skimmer height is reduced, so I could always shorten it a bit more if thats not enough.
