? on how to keep an eel in the tank and what to use.

I plan on keeping an Eel, either a Jeweled moray or a tesselata Eel in my 125. The tank is setup and is ready. My concern is keeping the Eel in the tank and not on the floor.

I have a light hanging over the tank (4 96 watt PC's), I would like to avoid putting glass tops on since they will block alot of light.

I was planning on drilling small holes in the plastic trim and zip tie egg crate to hold the Eel in. But everytime I would have to service the tank etc, I would have to go thru zip tie after zip tie. Will the Eel be strong enough to break the eggcrate? The eel would be atleast 12 Inches long and at most 16.

Any help would be great.

They will get more than 16" for sure. If you keep the glass clean, it shouldn't really block the light that much.

Im sure the Eel will be able to lift the glass tops once full grown or even the size the Eel will be once I get it. The 12 to 16 inches is the size the Eel will be when I purchase it.

Make the tank tight as a drum and then put bricks on top of it. I have glass tops on mine and they don't avoid that much light. Are you planning corals in there? If you aren't it shouldn't matter. Your standard glass hood blocks out 10-25% of your input light.

What are the dimensions of your 125? I'd want at least a 2 feet width for turning for a tess. I'm pretty sure the rule of thumb is the eel is allowed to be twice as wide as the tank width.

I'd do the Jewel, it isn't uncommon for you to see a 6 foot tess. Also isnt your dimensions a 150?

I am wondering the same thing about my zebra moray tha I plan on getting. I have a glass top, and that will not keep a full grown moray in. I am going to geta hood, and put pad locks on it.

Those are the dimensions of a 135. A 150 is 29 high.
Can egg crate hold up to the weight of a brick?

Those are the measurments of my tank, It said 125 when I bought it, but the tape measure doesnt lie.LOL

Egg crate wont support weight of bricks, I dont think the Eel will be able to break the egg crate, do you??

My tess was in my 180 till he got about 5' then I felt sorry for him and gave him to a local with a 500 hes closing in on 6' last time I saw him.... and they are stronger then you could ever imagine the top of my tank was "locked down" with ratchet straps because he pushed the cinderblocks holding the old top right offbut for my smaller eels they all just have weighted lids and it works just fine.........
