How big can my first water change be? How much should the following weekly ones be until I can get back to my normal 7 gallons a week? Here is a recent fts

I'd say you could do a 50% change with not too many problems.
I do 90% on my nanos each week and nothing seems to mind and they are doing well.

I know people that do weekly 100% changes with no ill effects.

I have heard people that do this but never seen it for my own eyes. I would think it would make the tank cycle each time. But this week I will be doing about a 75% WC.

No cycle. The majority of your bacteria is in your sand and rock. I had the same thought, but I had the opportunity to speak with Anthony Calfo last month ago and he is one of the big proponents on 100% changes, it's what he does with his greenhouse system. Water clarity is his main concern as he is trying to maximize the amount of light penetration in his prop system.
