The 250 watters would be better. Shimmers are not necessary.
T5's will use less power and cause less heat. Halides have shimmers. If heat isn't an issue I would probably get the halides.

Tank is 88'x60"x30" tall. I have 3xCoarvue e ballasts with Reeflux 12k on lumenbright reflectors. These will go in the back half of the tank for SPS. Looking at different options for the front half (mainly for LPS and polyps). Will 2x 36" 6 bulbs T5 fixture be a good option? Heat and electric use is important consideration. Opinion and suggestions appreciated. |

That aint a tank, it a hot tub.
Yeah that should work. I would use Lumenarc reflectors on the halides.

Would you go with all T5s or stay with MH in the back. Thanks |

Keep the halides, It would cost a fortune to light that thing with just T5's.

if i were to do two ice cap 440(for controlability) on a 75 w/ from front to back: uvl super actinic, uvl aquasun, ati ab special, ati ab+ what effect would i achieve and could i keep sps. the reason i ask is that i am interested in running two of the linkable moonlights that go with the aquacontroller jr and i need a little extra space for them. my tank is sps only and i dont mind the all day lighting looking a little white as long as i have the two actinics to control for morning and evening.

Yeah, doing what I just listed would give you enough for the SPS just use Ice Cap reflectors and dont forget the fans

Hi Grim, I’m about to switch out my current fixture. I plan on picking up a 4 bulb ATI unit when I make the switch. I would like to keep the option open for keeping a mixed reef in my 46 gallon bow, maybe even a clam towards the top of the rock work. Currently I run 2 Blue plus on my Maristar as supplemental lighting and love the blue look for dusk / dawn effect. I’m definitely picking up another 2 Blue plus with this new unit, so my concern or question is, which two bulbs would be best for keeping a mixed reef , but still giving the tank a white or slightly blue look when all 4 bulbs are on (I definitely don’t like a yellow tank)? In what order would you place the bulbs and would 5 inches above the waters surface be an ideal height for this fixture? It’s been a while since I’ve looked at T5s and it seems they have added many color choices. Choosing the last 2 bulbs has got me double guessing myself. Any info would be great, Thanks.

5 inches above would be fine.
For lamps try Front Blue Plus UVL Super Actinic UVL Aquasun ATI Blue Plus or Aquablue. The Aquablue would give you a more white look but not yellow.

Hi Grim,
A couple of months ago I upgraded from PC's to 4- 60" T-5's for my 125 gal tank. I just ordered 3 more T-5's for a total of 7 lights. I bought as many as I could fit in the canopy. Was that a smart thing to do or was it overkill? I have mainly LPS but may eventually get a clam or some SPS. Here is what I currently have and it is a bit purplish for my taste. front blue plus aquablue special pro color blue plus If I remember correctly, my new order includes 2 blue plus, 1 GE 6500K and an aquablue. I will have 8 bulbs for 7 lamps so I can switch things around if I don't like the color. They haven't shipped yet so I can probably switch the bulbs if you don't think this is a good combination. Since most of the bulb configurations in this thread are for 6 or 8 bulbs, which order and what bulbs would you use for 7 lamps? Also, how would you set the bulbs on timers? I currently have 2 timers with the 2 blue plus's coming on an hour earlier and staying on a hour later than the rest of the lights. Thanks in advance! |

If you can drop a blue plus from the order and get the ATI Actinic 03
blue plus Actinic Ge 6500K Blue Plus pro color Aquablue Blue Plus Try to arrange things so a blue plus and the actinic are on the same ballast for dusk/dawn. That should tone down the purple too.

Hey Grim! Is the extra money for the Icecap T5 ballast
worth it? I currently have a 90 Gallon mixed reef with 2 250W Hamilton 14K SE MH's. Everything looks good, but my corals do not really have that "pop" or fluorescence to them. I was told to add IceCap ballasts with 1-ATI blue plus and 1-ATI true actinic. So will I notice a significant difference in how my tank looks if I do this or would I get the same results with a cheaper ballast?
thanks a lot. Last edited by jwavec; 12/23/2007 at 09:17 AM. |

Mr Reefer
want to upgrade my liting on 125 have LPS dominated system and moving towards SPS. 60"x18x26 (not standard 125 +/-) 3-5" dsb currently x6 (60") vho bulbs on 2 ballasts sitting inside closed canopy open in the back... about 6.5" off top of the water... have seen threads where people are using VHO only and keeping SPS (seemingly successfully) - one thread in particular mentioned re vho bulb placement 2" off water for optimal liting not at all 'familiar' w/ liting options time to either replace these bulbs or get rid of them entirely. plan on adding halides would the current vho be ok as additional liting... or is it that much better using t5s to warrant purchasing them also? and what size halides/ballasts might you recom for this tank? thanks and regards |

WarrenAmy&Maddy,
If your VHO ballasts are IceCap, I would strongly reccomend you use 60" T-5s on IC sLR reflectors. You can contact iC directly and buy pairs of 36" SLRs that you simply overlap for like 26$. The IC 660 will run 3 and a 430 will run 2. On an 18" wide, 26" deep tank, 4-6 T-5s would be perfect for SPS/mixed reef. James

Grim Im deciding between a 4x54w SLR retrofit, or 2x 175w 20000k MH to light my 55g. I want to keep Clams and lps. Heat is a serious issue. I dont wanna buy a chiller. The T5's are cheaper than the MH, but would they be enough to support the clams?

I am not Grim, but based on what I have read in the rest of this thread... yes, T5s would be enough.
