refugium question-hair algae
I have a 20-gallon refugium with a nice ball of cheato in it. I also have hair algae growing on the sides/walls of the refugium.
Do I clean all of this off or Is it good that its growing here and not in display (very little only on sand in display)? thanks

I've got a little in my fuge. I commend it for finding a way to find enough nutrient with the caulerpa and chaeto in there! You could always scrape it when you prune your macros. This way you're exporting before it has a chance to sporulate and spread to your display..

Thats a pretty good idea.

With that timeframe in mind and the fact that you have the hair algae in both the fuge and the sand in the display, there is some nutrient issues going on here that I (personally) would address.
Do you feel that you have sufficient water movement in the main display? By sufficient, I mean when you feed your inhabitants do you find that uneaten food / fish p o o p is settling on the bottom? |

Be extra careful if you do clean the fuge to turn of your return pump, and let everything settle before you turn it back on.

I think I'll extract most if not all of the hair algae.
I have a lot of flow in the display from 2 vortechs. I do use rodi water and attempt to get a consistent tds reading of less than 7.

What grows in the fuge is taking nutrient away from what might grow in the tank. IE, if it's growing well in the fuge, which is lighted longer, it will not grow well in the tank, which is lighted less. I have some caulerpa in my fuge---not my choice: it hitched in. When I sell on my excess cheato I will cut off and sell that end, but I have none of the caulerpa OR cheato in my display.
