Sump Designs for 90g tank.
I am no longer using my reeflo pump and have opted for a lot less flow going through my tank on the return side by using a mag5 . So sump sides do not need to be drilled.
Reason im doing this is because my pvc skills are shotty , ill have left over LR from redoing the display , and my current acrylic sump is basically a sock filter and thats it . I am getting a local reefer with good acrylic skills to build it for me . my max length is going to be 32 inches , although this could be longer the width would have to be 12 inches since the inside of cabinet allows this if I get it inbetween the support beams . I am looking at about 3 chambers , seperated by the "3" commonly found baffle system ( reversed as seen in melevs designs ) .. Id like to have 14w as this allowed my skimmer to be places diag without having to allow 20 freakin inches for it . the length for the skimmer section will be 11 inches . My question comes in , the last 2 baffles where should the fuge\return be? the middle or last . What should be my sump height and water height through out this sump ? Should I use a filter sock? How would this work if I need to leave a section for the collector cup And the size of these last 2 chambers , I am assuming the return section needs to be no longer than 6 inches? Thankyou for your time RC members.

Check out Melevs Reef site: http://www.melevsreef.com/allmysumps.html
Some good stuff on there about sumps/fuges. Also remember that your return area is where the water level will fluctuate due to evaporation. The smaller it is, the more frequent you will need to top off. An ATO would remedy all that manual filling. This seems to be the popular setup now a days: Skimmer --> Return <--- Refugium Tee your overflow so it goes to both the skimmer and fuge sections. Place some inline valves to control the flow to each area. This allows a taller fuge area giving you more fuge volume, as the fuge is completely separate of the skimemr area now. You can adjust the water depth for the skimmer area accordingly. The skimmer water level can be a little higher and then place skimmer on a stand . Be sure to leave enough volume for a power outage if anywater flows back into your sump. |
