I have a 120 gallon glass show tank. The measurements on it are 48" x 24" x 24". It has a plastic brace that runs through the middle of the tank from plastic rim to plastic rim. It is very flimsy to me but im afraid it provides alot of support to the tank. I wanted to know if i could cut it off since it is blocking 2 of my lunar lights that throw off the moon set for the tank. Would it be ok to cut it off or would that be a bad idea?????

It's there for a reason. I have seen tanks where people had replaced it with a glass or acrylic brace but something needs to be there.

If it didn't need to be there, the manufacturer wouldn't have spent the money to put it there. It keeps the glass from bowing in the middle. It could be replaced or Eurobraced, but this would be a major undertaking.

Bad idea, very bad idea .... You have a few choices that i can think of right off the bat 1 ) Glass Euro brace the whole tank 2) Replace the center brace with glass brace 3) Move you moon lights so they are not blocked |

I wouldn't mess with it while the tank is full. Can you relocate the moon lights? At least that way you dont have to worry about the glass or seams failing.

The moon lights are on a fixture that is 48" long and has 3 sets of 2 moon lights. One of the set it dead smack in the middle. I need to replacr the ballast on the PC's so when i do that i can drill 2 small holes to move the lunar lights.

Do not remove that brace!!! My brother had a 65G tank he removed the brace on explode earlier this year! He removed it a year before that. I guess it just took some time but the front glass cracked from the bottom of the tank up. He heard it and as he began siphoning water out, it all gave. He was lucky he did not get hurt.
Anyways, leave it in! |
