Needle Nose Hawkfish?

What all do they eat? Could he be eating my peppermint shrimp?

Mine eats mysis and chopped shrimp. I don't have any pepperment shrimp but I think they'd be just a bit too large...it is possible though, if your hawkfish is fully grown.

He is 2 years old. So I am sure he is a adult. What is the best way to see my pepperment shrimp. At night with a flashlight.

I believe they are known to eat shrimp. Here's a quote from Live Aquaria,

"The Longnose Hawkfish is a hardy, semi-aggressive fish but other larger hawkfish will overpower it. Although it eats small fish and shrimp, it makes an excellent reef inhabitant under the proper conditions."

Have the hawkfish and the peppermint shrimp been in the reef together for some time or was this something recent?

It might be that it's fine. I have a cleaner shrimp in the tank with my Hawknose. It doesn't bother it at all, but the cleaner shrimp is 3/4 the size of the Hawkfish. Let us know over here, Flybynight.

well, I took a flashlight lastnight and looked around for about 20 mins and seen nothing. That is not a good sign. I do have 300 # of Live rock so there is still a chance they are still in there somewhere. Wish me luck.

You would be surprized how good shrimp are at hiding. I've got a 3" boxer shrimp in a 45g tank and he can just dissapear for days, even though his feelers are about 8-10" long

I hope so. I hate to spend $40 on shirmp and them end up as a meal for my Hawkfish. If he wants to eat shrimp I will go buy some that dont have shells and that he dont have to chace. Hehe
