If you're not going to drill then you would be better off buying a decent siphon overflow.

This one is likely the best around:

This one for instance will work just fine, it's definitely cheaper, but I'd slap a Durso on the stand pipe:

The differences in their design does make a difference. I've never owned a Life Reef overflow ... I own and still use 2 of the other overflows listed above and they have served me VERY well.

A siphon overflow can't compair to a good internal overflow though (if you were to drill your tank).

If you can't drill, I think it would be best if you splurged and bought yourself a good overflow that has a good track record. You definitely don't want to cut corners on an external overflow.

This standpipe works really well and is extremely quiet:

HOB Standpipe

Good Luck!

Wow ... $18.00 plus shipping for a Stockman Aqua-Silencer.

Make one: http://home.nc.rr.com/stockmanreef/aquasilencer.htm

And here's a link to his older design style: http://www.randystacye.com/dursostandpipe.htm

They are a good choice for the money! A friend of mine has one on his system.
