Cyano Grows In Phos-Ban Reactor?
I run a Phos-Ban Reactor with 50g of Phos-Ban (recommended doseage for my tank size) and cut up pieces of Poly-Filter per month on a Aqua Clear 20 (125gph with adjustable flow) I set the flow at it lowest setting to keep the Phos-Ban from grinding. After about 2 weeks of running it will grow red cyano in the reactor but it is in a suspended state. After 4 weeks I clean it out and put new Phos-Ban and Poly-Filter in it. Just wondering if this is common or not and maybe the flow is to slow? The cyano is not attacth to anything like red slime it just like hanging in the water right under the top foam filter. I use the pieces of Poly-Filter to help pull out phosphate.

I haven't seen cyanobacteria in my reactors. That's interesting. How is the tank doing?

Try covering the reactor to prevent light from going in. What are the nitrate levels?

My nitrate are at 20ppm. I run the light on the refugium 24/7 using the 5700K pc floodlight that melevsreef uses. The reactor is expose to that light 24/7 and often thought that might do that. Been fighting this nitrate problem for awhile trying to figured out what causing it. Doing all the things I have learned off of this RC. Last thing is I don't want to and I won't is using equipment to keep nitrate down without finding the reason and source. Far as my tank doing is I feel is good,Recordea Yuma are multiplying,Zooanthid are budding Trachyphillia expand very large. Next experiment is letting Chaeto grow more before harvesting, hopefully will do the trick. The only thing I can think of what happen is I put about 20 pound of live rock in and 30 pounds of lace rock and it taking time for the lace rock to become live. The lace rock has been in a saltwater aquarium for 1 year and the live rock been in there for 8 month.
