surge question

I have never seen a gravity fed surge device in action. My question is the following:
How does the surge device not allow for a rush of bubbles enter the tank?

There pretty much is a rush of bubbles on every one that I've ever seen. I think I heard that Rod is real into these so maybe he could shed some light on your question.

There will be bubbles no matter which type of device is used. The Carlson & reverse Carlson will put in more bubbles than the Rod/Borneman surge device, but I believe you will get more dynamic water flow from the carlson devices. Maybe we can get Rod and 444RK to chime in. They each use a different type.

I use the Borneman design.. The 2"ers put out a lot of bubbles, but the ones that are reduced to 1" only give a little burp at the beginning and a small amount of spray at the end. Through the main part of the surge, they are pretty much bubble-less

You could always use acuated valves. Set them so the surge never fully drains, and set your output below the water level. This gives you a bubble free surge, but it will cost you!

Brother, do you have one working like the one you describe?
I possibly would be interested in this in the future since I don't like splashy splashy.

Can you show a pic of yours?

I use the Carlson surges. After a few years of tuning, I am able to achieve a quiet, relatively bubble-free surge.

1.5"s fire great for me. Testing 3" soon.
