Fake SPS Corals

I've been having problems finding places for my Clownfish to hang out. They don't especially like my caves, and my crab keeps trying to attack them when they're beaching on the bottom of the substrate. We can't order or find SPS coral in Hawaii, so my wife brought up a good suggestion. Why not buy fake ones for them to hide in.

Anyone have previous encounters of this third kind? I know it's a far fetch, but I feel sorry for the little buggers.

I would try to find something a little more natural for a home than a fake SPS coral. Clownfish typically don't 'host' in small polyped stoney corals. I'd try a fake anemone or even various LPS corals, such as one of the euphyllia (frogspawns, torch, hammer, ect.) Ultimately though, you won't be able to give him a home and make him stay there. He's going to live where he wants, even if it's just a dugout in the sandbed.

Faking it, but not really making it?

As long as the faked out clowns are happy then I wouldn't worry. Clowns are not dependent on a host and live "long an prosper" in a tank without any anemones.

I think the Hawaii natives kill anyone that harvest corals along their shoreline. Or at least fine them heavily.

You got that right. If you walk out of the water with a nice piece of coral, you are hunted by the coral/live rock police. They take pictures of you and your car and send it in to the police. Then you can expect a nice hefty fine/jail time in the near future.

I like to play it safe.

Now fish, on the other hand, you can catch without worry.

Why fish and not rocks? That would be an awesome question, but i'm not willing to lose both privelages to a stupid question.

hawaii doesnt have many, if any soft corals. and you cant harvest them anyways, unless you get a permit for research. Fish on the other hand you can get a permit to harvest for aquariums.

I was able to catch a couple domino damsels, a few racoon and tear drop butterfly, christmas wrasse, and a tang I can't find the name of. Can anyone help me identify this guy?

you may not like the look, but many clowns seem to like "hosting" in little brown clay flowerpots.
