Check out the pinned thread-- Reef chem articles...
http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...hreadid=102605 In a nut shell-- Alkalinity-- Concentration mainly of carbonate CO3 Calcium-- concentration of calcium. Calcifying organisms use both to make their shells/skeletons... so both need to be maintained. Kalk aka Kalkwassar, aka limewater, aka Calcium Hydroxide... provides calcium and carbonate... Calcium is in it already.... Hydroxide (OH-) reacts with CO2 (carbon dioxide) in you water and makes CO3 (carbonate)-- a side effect of this is that it can raise your pH if you add to much... so is typically dripped in over several hours or constantly at a rate to match evaporation (whatever your tank's evaporation is).... The articles have lots more info... HTH...

That article is an easy introduction to dosing. The basics are calcium and alkalinity. Some tanks require magnesium dosing.
