Alternative to AutoCAD for drafting?

To any civil engineers, architects, or otherwise 2D drafters - is there a better alternative to AutoCAD? My company still uses it for 2D plan drafting, and I'm wondering if there's something else I should familiarize myself with before being sucked into the vortex.

diffrent areas of the country use diffrent programs. I have been with AutoCAD since R14, I have used AutoCAD Land Development desktop since 2000. The county I am with has made the change to Civil 3d with the new release. Around here Microstation is the other program sometimes used but it is usually confined to federal and State projects.

Pro E and other programs are used by some of the mechanical developers around here but you stated civil so I helpd my answer to that field.

Mutt works in Civil Engineering in Tennessee so I'm sure he will be chiming in soon.

Ok re read your question. Some companies use other programs but by far the most recognized are the ones I mention. Keep in mind that companies use programs in diffrent ways and have hugly diffrent drafting standards. So basiclly be ready to learn alot of new stuff when or if you change jobs. around here Drafters usually change jobs every 2-4 yrs for better pay and benifits.

For Architectural we are switching over from ACAD to Autodesk Revit. It is pretty amazing software compared to drawing with ACAD. I also worked many years designing mechanical machinery and used ACAD for it. I think Revit will take many hours/days/weeks/months out of a job once everyone is trained.

MicroStation, AutoCAD, and ArcMAP (a GIS program) are the 3 most widely used programs.

I'm also in the Civil Engineering field.

Around here the Cities and the Counties use Microstation. Most everyone else (Private) use Autocad.

At our company, We use Both Microstation/Inroads and Autocad/Land desk Development.

Both are excellent programs.

We use Solid Works but it's mostly for sheetmetal and Machine work I here you can make 3D stuff as well with the higher end versions.
