Very Interesting, you keep your alk in the low range 6.5 -8

Most of the SPS tanks has alk between 9-12 dKH

Now just one thing is missing, a picture from your sump :-)

With the ZEOvit method, raising alkalinity above 8 dKH can be detrimental and even lethal to SPS at higher levels.

I think he has already mentioned that he doesn't have a sump. I may be wrong though all that color has gone to my head.

Denadai I've never seen Prodibio or Zeo tanks with that high of Alk. you talk about.

I've seen a lot of USA Zeo tanks but for some reason these European Zeo tanks are just unreal in comparison. I don't know what you guys do differently but it works!

I heard from a german author that most of you guys use carbon and throw it out every week and replace with fresh carbon, do you Iwan?

What about water changes
What salt are you using right now?

Awesome tank's you have as always.

Interesting comment about the carbon being changed out each week. I think Zeo users do 15% weekly water changes.

That was weird, I didn't make that comment about the sump but I've been quoted as writing that. Denadai should get the credit for that comment.

Actually that was the case several years ago. The general thinking has swung back in the direction of keeping alk about 1dKH over natural seawater (~7 dKH) which would be around 8 dKH FWIW.

One of, if not the nicest colored tanks in the world. Only wish I could see it in person. Iwan is an artist

Iwan, have you posted the names of your corals. The colors are so good its hard to identify them.

Does anyone know why a higher alk causes problems using the zeo method and/or probidio method. I would think it may have something to do with the super low nutrients, but it would be good to know.

I was going to research it more before answering, but here's the gist of it. Zeolites function by ion exchange. That is, they absorb a charged particle and release a similarly charged particle. Not all zeolites are the same, some have an affinity for certain ions while others prefer different ions. The ZEOlites used in the ZEOvit method have a particular affinity for ammonium ions, and in exchange they release sodium and potassium. The ammonium absorbed onto the ZEOlith rock is used as nutrition for bacteria that are kept in relative high concentraion.

When carbonate hardness (alkalinity) is increased above 8 dKH, the ZEOliths begin to function differently in that they cannot absorb the ammonium as effectively. This results in a nutrient spike that can shock and harm corals that have adapted to a nutrient-poor environment. I'll read more about this and update if necessary, but I'm pretty sure this is accurate.

Iwan,

In the 2nd picture in your last post it looks as though you are using a t-5 fixture that mounts to the top of your tank with minimal clearance. You mentioned ATI bulbs. Is this also an ATI fixture? The top of the line ATI power module here in the states is not available with legs to mount to the tank, it must be hung from the ceiling. Can you give us the details on your light fixture?

I use an ATI powermodule and one ATI sunpower. The lamps are hung up with rope tractions. The distance of the lamps to the surface of the water is minimal.

What is attached to the top lip along the side of the tank?

Iwan,
You've done it again!! Great looking tank! I'm a big fan since your last tank. Amazing colors! This is what we all strive for, IMO. Heck, i even had your homepage bookmark from the last tank thread. Keep it up!!

Iwan, glad to see you are back from the dead . As for the sump, I do think Iwan has one, he owns a ATI 250.
