I went fishing today and look...
...this is what I caught. Honestly 3.5 hours fishing and this is all I caught.
Cna anyone out there tell me what type of acto this is and what I can put him in. I have an extra 10G nano and wouldn't mind putting him in there but seeing as how saltwater tanks are only 9 months new to me, I think an octo is a bit more extensive. |

It is a dark red and yellowish. sort a stony patter but no protrusions on the skin(very slick). About 4" inches from top to tentale end when fully extended and about 1.5 inches when all balled up. It was stuck to a rock that was on my line when I dragged it in. |

Honeymoon Island. I found a rock with zoathids on it but figured it was illegal to take gulf rock so I put it back.

if you get lucky it is a pigmy and he will stay small. but I don't know much about them. I have seen pigmy octo in reefs before. it was a large tank and they feed him very well. I had one for a bit but my blue spiny lobster ate the octo after only 5 days.

IMO you should put it back. Better that way for the both of you. Octo's are not easy to keep and they're master escape artists. If your tank isn't practically sealed, chances are it'll get loose.

Not sure what species but regardless, Octo's require expert care and like sharks really belong in the ocean and not in a tank. If you consider that they usually only live about 1-2 years in the wild we should respect that and let them live out their short lives in the open ocean. Just my 2 cents.

Are you sure they were zoas? Alot of rock out there is covered with small brown anemones, but I only ever see them when the tide is low and they are exposed. Were you on a boat or fishing off the shore? Cuz I dont recall any of them having zoas on them. Look like anemones to me. Act like them too.
Ive sat there for awhile playing with them before.

i'm pretty sure they were zoas but as everyone has stated they were brown before they came out of the water and closed up. the rock I placed in a calmlittle spot but we were fishing off shore about 1/8 mile out. not much but I am going to take this little guy back in the a.m.

Ahhh come on.. consider keeping him for a while and enjoy. You can let him go later, you've already brought him home and out of his area and acclumated him to your tank. After-all lots of people would have just used him for bait! Sounds like a good size and has color too.
They are cool to watch I wish I had one to watch. Dennis (mrferrit) was right about them being able to get out but people keep them just fine with a little extra care. He'll eventually eat the smaller fish.
