I have sort of been keeping myself from posting in this thread 'cause I have not read this book, nor have I seen the movie. Honestly, I hadn't ever heard of Chris McCandless until I first read this thread. I have not Googled him or done any research into his life whatsoever but from what I gather by reading this thread it sounds to me like this guy knew what he had and knew it wasn't everything. He was in a position to live a life of comfort and security that most people try their entire life to achieve. Instead of cruising through life he chose to abandon material wealth in search of something greater. I highly doubt that his decision was based on anything remotely resembling the impression he would leave on people who would later read a book or see a movie based on his life. He seems to have felt that there was more to his existence than he was going to find by staying where he was, and he decided to go find out for himself what or where that may be. Does that make him a hero? no. It doesn't make him an idiot either. All i can see in him is a human who decided not to live by the rules laid out before him, but rather to blaze his own path and possibly encounter a part of himself that he felt was missing. I for one hope that he at least got a glimpse.

And don't take anything posted in this forum too personally. I don't think any of the comments are made with malice towards you or your opinions. People voice a wide variety of thoughts and ideas, but when the chips are down, they tend to be very supportive and caring, (as in the "Nina" thread right now.)

PS: no one here wants you to crash out of a race either. We want you to go on to win the Indianapolis 500 so we can say we know the first woman to win that race.
That's great to hear doc, tell me what you think after you read it again!

PS. On the Indy 500 -- I hope so too!

I can't help but be reminded by this story of a book called "The Man Who Walked Through Time" by Colin Fletcher. That book is the author's account of his(he was the first) solo hiking trip from one end of Grand Canyon National Park to the other. Below the rim. If you want to read a story about a personal journey, that's a good one in my opinion.

Leilani, you just made me die from laughter. I swear to all that is holy that I made up the Ho Ho thing to lighten things up. I had no idea that existed.

Yah, Brain. Do a search for Ho and Lelani so you can catch up on all the gossip.

(I'm gonna burn for that one.)
