The coldness and callousness reflected by people posting about a young man who, regardless of how, lost his life, strikes me as sad and insensitive. Sure he took a risk going into the wilderness, but if you read the story you would know he researched surviving in the wild and had planned this trip for a long time. He didn't just hike off into the woods on a whim. He had studied the berries and nuts that he could gather in the area and did quite a good job of hunting animals to supplement his diet to survive-- we know this from the journal he kept. He survived for 113 days out there, with nothing but a bag of rice. There is some suggestion, though it cannot be confirmed, that he was mistakenly poisened by some seeds that closely resembled the potato seeds he had been eating for a long time while in Alaska.

LMAO? Really? It makes me sad to see how mean some of the comments here about him, because a young man took a risk and died and I find it rude to laugh at anybody who has lost their life, regardless of how it happened.

If I were to get hurt driving my race car, does that mean you would come on this forum and make fun of me for being an idiot and say "A girl gets on a racetrack and goes 200 mph next to a wall and gets into a wreck. LMAO....please tell me that you find this book in the humor section and the film is a comedy, right?"

Well, yes I am taking a risk by doing what I do for a living, I accept that is the risk I take. That does not mean I want to die. And I don't think it would be very cool of you to make fun of me and post things like "LMAO" when referring to my story. The sad thing is, by looking at the comments made here about Chris, that is what I would expect.

I am quite sure Chris McCandless's family would agree with me on this one. He, just like you and me, has a mom and a dad and siblings that loved him. It is wrong to make fun of a young man who made some mistakes and paid with his life.

Uh oh, I just got chastised for being mean and insensitive. Oh woe is me, now I have to run off and bite my pillow.

Leilani, fwiw, you're not the only one who feels that way. I'm just not as articulate at voicing it. I have a certain degree of admiration for someone who is willing to take risks to accomplish their dreams. Too many of us fail to do all those things on our lifetime "to-do" list because of fear.

not everyone that puts themselves at risk and/or dies following some adventurous path deserves to be looked up to as a pioneering free spirit,
some are just wacks listening to the voices in their heads, others are wacks trying to escape the voices, and yet others are true free spirits seeking to push their boundaries.

which one was mcandless? or was he a combo? I doubt we'll ever know

then you may want to consider having the darwin awards canceled.
some deaths and the manner thereof are funny and serve as a skimmer for the gene pool and a tad bit of comic relief for society as a whole

no offense intended to you or anyone else,

that is my opinion

I lean towards wackjob.

Leilani, how would you feel if someone came up to you and said they were qualified to drive an Indy Car because they had researched it and read a book about doing it?

people die everyday. It is hardly ever fortunate. There are also people born everyday.

There are so many people in the world, what is the difference if one dies here or there?

So some kid died out in the wilderness. whoopdy-do.

Call me cold, I dont care.

Leilani, not everyone is going to agree with your opinion and if you can't accept that, you shouldn't post here.

I'd like to think that we're all adult enought to voice differing opinions on a subject without it coming to that.

Everyone's opinion is welcome, even those that disagree with mine and are therefore obviously very wrong.

Let's all play nice or Buster will have lounge lizard for Thanksgiving. I would prefer to avoid that because it gives him gas.

I hardly consider the comparison of your long, deliberate and calculated accumulation of racing experience ultimately leading to the highest level of competition based on proven skill and ability to that of a misguided young man who read a few books and placed himself into a situation for which he was completed unprepared and ultimately resulted in his death as valid.

I was not laughing at the tragic outcome of Chris McCandless's life and choices. I simply said that I did not find inspiration in his choices. As a parent of children in their mid-20s, I cannot imagine anything more painful and tragic than losing one of my kids in such a manner. To think of a bright and caring child starving to death in the wilderness while on a journey to find him or herself as inspiring is certainly your choice, but it isn't mine.

I am going to the Yukon with a box of Ho-Hos and a tub of glue (don't ask).

Who wants to rough it with me?

My guess is they go into a starter circuit of some sort. I have a strange feeling that they're not going to let him into the brickyard just because he's confident that any monkey can do the job if you train it enough.

I could be wrong. I think it's happened before.
