Without lighting - what else

Without proper good lighting, there is nothing else I can add to my tank other than LR. No corals. No sponges, No micro alge. etc.

If I choose to keep my standard florecent bulb, there is nothing else I can add to the tank.

Correct?

i do not think that sponges need light. I'm not 100% sure on that though

mushrooms will grow under most lighting conditions.
also an advantage of decreased lighting, you should see your coraline algae really take off

xenia needs light, but I believe yellow polyps are non-photosynthetic.

There are better bulbs you can buy that will work with the basic florescent setup. Check out one of the sponsors on the RC homepage. I have a pretty good light bulb that was on my 46 bowfront (single bulb 18k, well that's what the packaging says), it works great for my fuge.

Softies can usually handle low light conditions. It depends on the species. Many corals depend heavily on photosythetic, symbiotic algae to survive. Those that don't need only minimum light. Do a search for any coral you are considering and, if it can handle reduced light, it should be fine in a low light tank.

Non-photosynetic creatures such as sun corals and filter feeders don't require any light at all. Of course, they present their own challenges and will probably die on you much more easily than some mushrooms which will grow under a desk lamp with screw-in PC bulbs.
