burn position
Could someone please describe to me the burn positions of a DE metal halide bulb...
i understand there are bulbs that are best fired horizontally, vertically and some that are universal.. What part of the bulb is this position referring to? is it the glass tabs on the end of the bulbs? is it the little metal disc thing in the bulb? i want to change my bulbs and after seeing that my iwasaki bulb said vertical...and now my aqua connect 14k says nothing but my Ushio say horizontal i am a little concerned... also does the burn position effect the colour temp output of the bulb or just the life expectancy? thanx in advance... i tried searching and for some reason it pointed me to Skimmer problems...? |

yeah they only go in one way. You sure you're not talking about SE bulbs?

they are double ended bulbs the packages say vertical burn or horizontal burn...assuming that all DE fixtures only hold the bulbs horizontally i would think they are reffering to another part of the bulb thathad to be vertical or horizontal...the only things in the bulb i see that are on "planes" so to speak would be the tabs on the sides and the little metal disc thing inside the bulb...or perhaps i am just reading too far into the horizontal and vertical thing...
BTW when my bulb is in the holder it will freely spin along its axis...i have put the new one in so that the nipple thing is down (tank side) and the glass tabs are perpendicular with the back of the reflector..

What wattage are we talking about? 70 watt and 150 watt DE the bulb can be oriented in the socket nipple up or nipple down. 250 watt and 400 watt DE is a different socket and different bulbs ends and you are at the mercy of the bulb manufacturer. The bulbs only go into the socket one way. You can install either bulb end into either end of the socket but that does not orient the nipple any differently. I even have a set of 250 watt bulbs where the nipple faces up on one and down on the other when installed in the sockets.
The burn position refers to the entire lamp. I havent seen any DE fixtures that oriented the bulbs vertically so ... nothing to worry about. Anyway, 150 watt (or 70), I think most go with nipples up. You can try it both ways and see if you can tell a difference. I never could see a difference myself in color or intensity. 250 watt and 400 watt, you dont have an option. |
