Asfur Angelfish compatibility concerns
I am bringing a new 125g tank online and am just about to add the inhabitants from my old tank (46bf). I was considering adding an Asfur angelfish but I had a few concerns.
I have a Coral Beauty angel, is the Asfur compatible? They're completely different body shapes but my Coral Beauty is quite aggressive sometimes. I was considering putting the Asfur in first and letting him get comfy and then adding the CB from the old tank. I'm also concerned about Reef compatibility, i've heard that the Asfur is one of the most reef compatible but there still can be issues. My tanks are fed pretty heavily and I try to keep the inhabitant counts low. Any suggestions? Thanks, Ed

I have both in my tank they pretty much ignore each other also both are in my reef and have been for about 3 years now. Think I have a picture of the Asfur in my gallery.

Looks good, what is the size of the tank and what's the size of the fish?
No fighting at all? |

Tank size is about 340 gallons (1200 litres) and the asfurs are about 10 cm
They get well together, the first days were a little bit hard between them... |

I had one for over a year in my reef tank and I ended up removing it due to it not being reef safe and it became territorial as it grew larger. It would harrass other fish that were similar in size and it nipped at several LPS and my anemones.

I think John (copps) removed his due to it's non-reef-safe behavior

I have Asfur for many years, as the years passes he becomes more and more agressive towards other fish and also munching on corals he never touched before.
For example, after 3 years he decided that Clams are food. With all this ,I must say it is one,of my fav angels, a real beauty. |

Oooof. So much for the "more reef compatible" concept. Sounds like everyone is having problems with their Asfur eating their reef over time! I am an SPS only fan though so I might be alright. I only have a few LPS pieces and a few Zoa colonies left and any of my fish are welcome to eat those.
Maybe i'll just get a nice Blenny instead.

Mine is in with only SPS and a few clams at this point hasn't really ever bothered anything to this point probably about 6" at this point so getting to a fairly decent size. It is fairly agressive however to new arrivals and the boss of the tank in general. As far as the pair of the Asfur and CB they started in my 150 and moved to my 480 2 years ago. As far as large Angels in general I would say none of them are Zoa safe and most will pick at anemones without a nice large pair of aggresive clowns to protect them. Just a list of the Angels I have for an idea in my 480: Asfur , Majestic , Bellus, Coral Beauty, and a Regal the regal is the newest addition and was ingored by the res of the angels though my Regal tang picked on it at first go figure.

These are now again being aquacultured in Taiwan, but I'm unaware of anyone who sells them in the states... I got into the hobby when asfurs cost from $700 to over $1000 almost 20 years ago, so I'll always have a sweet spot for this fish... such a unique Pomacanthus! Copps

That's an awesome picture! I see that you're a fan of the same kinds of fish that I am... Angels, Tangs, and Anthias.
I went ahead and did the Asfur (got him for $90 locally) and he's doing quite well. He and my Coral Beauty tangle a bit here and there, but no more than they tangle with the other fish. Thanks to everyone for the advice. Now I get to see how reef safe he is.

I got mine in a fire sale...for a great price. When I saw him eating flakes right from the start, I couldnt pass him up. He was abit shy at first but gets along great with a purple tang and cherub pygmy in my 120...doesnt touch any of the SPs or other corals either...

One of my favorites as well, always wanted one. Took down the reef and converted to fowlr with some corals
Too bad you can't see the beautiful coloration without lots of light, here's mine. Very tough and aggressive fish even at its small size of 3 inch. |
