Refugium water flow

What's the best water flow for the refugium. Low or high flow?

usually low. you only want about 250-500 gph going through your refugium (this also depends on how large your system is though). the water has to have contact time with all of your algae and media to perform effectively. if the water is just washing through everything fast, you arent going to have efficient use of the refugium.

It does however help to have good water flow within the 'fuge itself.

Slow turnover from the display, and good circulation in the sump via closed loop or power heads ussually does the trick.

I've heard Bob Fenner recommend around 5x the tank volume per hour. Otherwise I would say it depends a little on setup and what you are trying to keep in your fuge.

flow in fuge is an arguable topic and really depends on how the fuge is set up. If your going DSB you want high flow as to keep particles in suspension as long as possible, chaeto also prefers high enough flow to roll it around.

If your after critters and doing some other method such as berlin or using caulerpa lower flow does much better.

If your a nutcase like me, you run a remote DSB with a TEE on the return pump to recirc a lot of the flow back into the DSB itself to increase flow through that area without having to go high flow in your separage fuge section.

I added a powerhead in the refugium to increase the flow.
