Get your media from two part solution. I fill mine up about 2/3rd of the way and replace it every two weeks.

Bret,

I had thought the media lasted much longer that that. That would get sort of expensive every two weeks. Its $12/lb at Two part right? 2/3 would be a least a pound.

I have been changing mine every couple months but that may be too long. I need to be testing PO4 more often to know.

My reactor is a smaller version and I guess the 2/3 is the distance between the sponges and not the whole reactor. It is probably about a 1/2 pound per fill, not too bad.

I also am battling some algae and tend to feed heavy. I don't like to run carbon so it gets exhasted quicker, IMO.

I also find it is worthless after a month and sometimes early depending on my water change schedule.

Just a Question. Is there really any reason why people do not just use rusty iron? Looking on my Phosban container the ingredients are just feric oxide hydroxide. A fancy name for rust.

Ummm. Pure Iron is Fe on a periodic table. I see what you are saying though that getting pure iron is almost impossible. On the otherhand outside of the Aluminium I doubt anything else would be bad for a reef. I think I'm going to have to test this of course on a small tank just in case it does kill everything.

Just changed my phosphate media Monday night. Phosphates had crept up on me but tonight they are back to almost undetectable. Yeah! Phosphate reactors do work very well. I only wish I had a nitrate reactor that worked as well. I am still crossing my fingers on my DIY model.

Have you tried a refugium for the nitrates. It is the best addition to my tank and my fish just love it!!

Yes, I have a refugium, Cheato, 2 DSB's and Mangroves. But I also have a Puffer and Sun Corals! I will beat this someday. I better remove my Signature line though until I get them back under control. About 20 last night.

Nope separate tanks. Don't worry he is not in with the Xenia either. ;0) All salt tanks are tied together through the sump though.

My puffer doesn't bother GSP or mushrooms. Haven't tried any SPS yet, only have NO lighting on the aggressive tank currently.
