whats the best HAWK Fish?
Ive had a long nose hawk fish before and he was great i started a new tank and see that they re alot of hawk fishes to pick from.
what do you think is the most interesting one? i plan on keeping a reef in the future |

I like the long nose Hawk best, then the Falco, and lastly the Flame. I lost my longnose when he decided to go carpet surfing. I am looking into getting another.

lol actualy thats what i think i had now looking at them side by side. its been some time but the redspotted was the one i had - he was cool.
20 reefer- did you have a longnose at any other time as well? wanted to know how they differ? |

Ive had a flame in my reef for almost 3 years now and it has barely even grown! Lots of personality and has never bothered any of my shrimp...and I have lots of different ones(sexy, anemone, cleaners, blood, blue coral banded and a few pepermints) I like the flames!

I had a flame, longnose & a arc-eye together in my 135. I didn't have any problems.

I had a Longnose for a while and I think they are assume, but mine jumped out, as so many do. He didn't bother my shrimp, but I only had him for a few months.
About a year ago I got a Geometric Pygmy Hawk:  He hid for a while in the beginning, but comes out alot more now. They only get about 1-1/2" - 2" max. and are probably the safest with shrimp. Not quite as visible as the Longnose, but they are pretty cool too. |

I agree with the "Falconut" on the Geometric Pygmy hawkfish. They can be a little shy at first, but once they get comfortable they are much more outgoing, plus because they stay small no real problems usually with aggression or eating ornamental shrimps.
The only thing is they are not actually Hawkfish, even though they behave and look just like them. I believe they are actually some type of Anthias. |

I have had a flame hawk and a spotted hawk in my 65 gal for 4 months. No problems between the two. I love the flame!

as far as the flame does anyone have a problem with it eating feather dusters or any other invertebrates? |

and also it says that hawkfish eat small shrimp but has anyone had problems with it eating a cleaner shrimp?

Be careful with the flame hawk. They can be aggressive. I had one which did not take a liking to my royal gramma and constantly chased my gramma into hiding. I would definitely add the hawk toward the end b/c of potential aggression.

I have owned many different hawks in my 120 gal Fo.
Ive had : Falco G. Pygmy Flame Freckled Longnose && currently own an Arc Eye. I think that my Arc Eye has had the most personality, they are very cool and very entertaining to watch. He gets along with all of his co-inhabinats ( puffers,triggers,tangs,eels,damsels, and even some cleaner and peppermint shrimps && he loves being cleaned) He swims around perching on everything he can find. Id go with an arc-eye and if intended to keep with shrimp , add the shrimp first !!!

This species is an excellent choice for an aggressive community setting. This species is bold and predatory. Do not keep it with fish equal to, or smaller than its own length, because it can (and will) swallow them. Keep only one per tank unless you have a very large aquarium. Provide with structures to perch on and nooks and crannies to hide in. |
