Hydrated Lime
At a local farm supply store they sell 50 pound bags of hydrated lime. I am assuming this is the same thing as Kalk. It certainly smells and tastes the same. It is a lot cheaper then the small containers I order online. Would it be safe to use instead?

hard to tell if it is food grade though.

one good thing about Kalk is that when you mix it with fresh water it creates a very high PH environment and most impurities will precipitate out. so it may be just fine to use

I tried some garden lime once. It mixed to a pH of 5, whatever it was it wasn't the lime I needed.

I wouldn't use it. I'd stick to the food-grade products, which aren't that expensive.
