a m57 ballast which are the ballasts that are in parking lot fixtures will only start probe start bulbs, you can tell if its a probe start bulb by looking at the arc tube inside, if it has 3 terminals going to it (2 on one side and 1 on the other). now if it only had 2 terminals going to it (one on one side one on the other) then its a pulse start bulb which requires a ballast with an external ignitor.

but you can fairly easily add an ignitor to the circuitry and use the pulse start bulbs.

Im not really sure why I ever bought such expensive halides. I have TWO parking lots across from AND behind my house...Im surrounded by halides waiting to be stolen!
