Cut 29 gallon to 16" height???

My son upgraded his 29 gallon fresh water to a 46 bowfront.
The 29 gallon with stand available. I have just started a 20 gallon salt tank with 40 lbs of rock 6 weeks ago.

I only have room for the 30" of tank length in my alloted tank space.

I was thinking of using the 29 gallon and cutting 2" off the top and making it a 16" tall tank, using the 20 gallon for my sump and converting my 24" coralift light to span the 30" tank.

Am I crazy, or junkyard genius?

ideas?

I've never heard of this being done....

Since you're asking, I doubt that you are a glass cutter by trade. I feel like this surely will end in disaster. Though, I'm sure someone somewhere can get it done... are you up for it?

I know you want to use this tank because it is available, but you could consider these readily available dimensions.

15 Long 24 x 12½ x 13 Tall
20 Tall 24 x 12½ x 17 Tall
20 Long 30 x 12½ x 13 Tall
29 Gal. 30 x 12½ x 17 Tall

Sounds like it is worth a shot. The worst thing that could happen is you totally destroy the tank!!

what if I just add 1" to the sand bed and keep the water 1" lower?

That would make up the difference and give me 6" more of length.

Hmm... I'm not sure I fully understand your height issue.

I can not leave an open tank due to the tanks backing onto an open stairwell and stuff dropping in.

I have power compacts - aqualights 130 watt.

I want the extra length of tank but not the depth so I limit my coral selection.

thanks

u can cut it but i doubt u have the right tools. i cut a 20g in half. what i used was a tile saw the kind that looks like a mini circular saw. i set it in the grass turned on the hose and went at it. the top was a little chipped so i just glued the black trim back on.
