Amazing!

Mike...what an incredible reef tank! As I read each section of your beautifully informative descriptions, I was more and more in awe!

A few questions...how long did it take you to complete the tank that you now have? Did you do it in stages? How did you have all this knowledge?

Last but not least...how do you find the time to spend all that is necessary to keep it so well maintained? Especially with a new baby in the family!!!

Thanks again for sharing...and congrats!

Cindy

I agree with you and appologies if that may have offended you. There are, as you say, many which look fabulous with 250s and so many of those have been shown on TOTM. I simply felt that with 400s I could get a much greater selection of bulbs which would still provide high PAR levels even if I did decide to go with 20k bulbs. The other factor for me in choosing 400s was the particular "color" of light that I was looking for. Seems there are soooooo many options and differences depending on the bulb, ballast and fixture. I was never quite happy with the colors in my previous 90g which ran 2x250 SE 14k so I began looking for pictures of tanks which had a color that agreed with me.

Mike's tank pretty much kicked me upside the head as the color and brightness of the lights were exactly what I was looking for. I'd bet, that on a 180 like mine, there is probably a 250w combination out there which would have produced the same result but I just had not found one quick enough so I went with the exact lighting combo as his.

No offense taken at all

I was just trying to state that you really don't need 400's on that size tank and they produce a LOT more heat than 250's..... since you were concerned about heat.

Thank you Cindy for the kind words..

My tank has been running for about 2 1/2yrs or so..I built the tank in one shot ..With all the equipment and live rock. Over the years I have learned from a lot of knowledgeable people in this hobby. I feel that you stick with one recipe that works and you don't change it..You would be surprised the bigger the tank the easier they are...

I can't imagine how many husband/wife "please I need a new tank" conversations that's gonna start

"But it will make things easier honey"

My wife has heard that one a few times

Yes to a point

I don't have a tank near your size so I don't really know when it comes to that large of a tank.

I think it's easier to raise livestock in a more stable environment but maintenance is more of a chore with a bigger tank IME.
It's much easier for me to scrape all the corraline and do a 20% water change on my 29 than it is on my 120.
If anything ever goes really wrong (AEFW's, toxin the tank etc...), and that's when reefing gets really hard IMO, then a larger tank can be a whole lot more to deal with than a smaller one.

Don't worry, that won't keep me from saying "look honey Mike has a 500 gallon tank and says it's easier to take care of than the one I have"

I'll probably have to tell myself that too to take the plunge someday

I guess I'm thinking more along the lines of work required than ease of keeping livestock.

Mike would you say that your tank is essentially barebottom with a refugium running? I know that you had stated a lot of your sand got pushed to the back from the flow in the tank, so I was curious if you considered it a functional sandbed still or if you considered your tank to be a barebottom. Thanks for any info!

Mike...I agree with what you said about finding what works and sticking to it. I have pretty much done that for the past 10 years...my only major change being I went from a 75 to a 90 gl tank. Lately, I am having Nitrate issues (+160) and just installed a de-nitrator unit...gave my husband the job of installing a shelf for it, since the area my tank is in does not have all that much space!

Incredible tank! I'm in awe of how well thought out your tank is considering the space requirements and dimensions!

Incredible!
