Nanos at Work

How many of you guys (and gals) have nano/picos at work?

What do you suggest I look towards if I'm going to put a nano on my desk at work.

I have my own office (although not that big) so I have a little bit of room to play with.

Any suggestions would be invaluable!

Thanks

Careful. From my experience, the bigger the nano the more time you'll have your hands in the tank during work hours. Only a few months back, I became so overly obsessed with this hobby that I would sometimes roll up my sleeves to move a coral while a client was sitting at my desk! Finally my reef addiction got so bad that I decided to work from home. Now I can have a coral frag in one hand and a cell phone in the other, without having to explain myself anyone (but my wife).

So IMO, perhaps a pico would be better for your office? But then again, if I were to set up a tank at my new office, I'd go even bigger. hehe. Curious to see what you decide to do for yourself.

Don't work too hard.

I have a 12g Aquapod "open top" with a 150w MH hang on for lighting...

I also have the problem of working on it at work instead of working...but I put mine about 10 feet from me...couldn't imagine having it on my desk! I would NEVER get any work done...as it is now I find myself sometimes just sitting in one of the chairs in my office gazing at it! (but I would have to kick my Admin Asst out of the chair first! )

Need to snag a couple of pics of it someday...

Purple...I have been really contiplating getting a second Red Sea Max 34g and getting rid of the Aquapod...bigger would be better!

If possible, get a really solid board to put your tank on. You never know when you might change offices. Draining half of the water and moving the tank and board is much better than putting the stress directly on the bottom of the tank.

I did this for mine, and I'm glad I did.

edit:
I did the board for my 12 gallon nano. I built a base for my 5 gallon.
Here's a pic of the 5 gallon.

Fanof49ASU...that is an AWESOME looking 5g!

Although a cell phone pic...here is one of my 12g Aquapod in my office...has only been up for about month...rock and sandtaken from an established tank...not using any media in rear chanbers except 5lb of LR rubble and about a 1" thick piece of black foam in the overflow chamber to catch solids...I also run 1 unit of Chemi-Pure for 24hrs once a week and dose with 2-part to keep Calcium and such up for the clams...

I guess it is getting there...hopefully this time next year the Zoa frags will look like Fanof49ASU's!

I don't mean to hijack the thread....only trying to give hoho19 ideas.

Thanks G. It's been fun working this up.
Here's a larger pic of my tank. The first one is difficult to see the zoas.

I took a 1/2 10 gallon (5 gallon frag tank) and built a fuge in the back. It has really good flow throughout.
IMO, it's the best desktop size.

Fanof49, that is very nice. Is that a common tank to find? I think I may sneak one of those into my office space. What are you using for lighting?

I've seen that size around Nashville.....it's a 'frag tank'.
It's made by Glasscages, and so far so good....no leaks yet....but I have become more concerned about protecting my investment and have been getting quotes for a new tank.

I'm using the Nova Extreme 48w (24"). Due to an ordering error with Prem. Aquatics, I received 2 setups (and was charged for both). I was going to send one back, but I started using them both. I have the lamps at such a low level over the corals, the light wasn't dispersing into the back enough.....so I added the 2nd set.

My corals are anywhere from 2"-4" below the water's surface....so my light's are quite efficient at that distance.

Scaast.....That's one sweet looking tank! Are you running one pump or 2?

two maxi-jet 400's on each end...it's hard to see because of the black acrylic, but there are 3 compartments in back. The 400s provide great flow without creating a dust storm. I'll plug them into a jbj wavemaker also.

i just called glass cages and asked if they could build me a 36"x18"x13" (one of thier standard sizes) with a sump built into the back. the manager was rude as hell and said that it would be too much labor. i told her it would basically be like building a sump and she hung up. very amazed at thier style of customer service.
