need help on buying camera
Is there any good(I mean ok) SLR camera out there that in the $300 range? I think 5-7 mp is good enough. But the camera is the cheaper the better.
Thank you Please give the brand, model, estimate price and if posible where to buy it(website). It can be an older model or from ebay. |

If you can stretch your budget out to around $400 you could pick up a Nikon D40 kit or D100 off of ebay. If you're lucky and search other camera forums you might be able to pick up a nice DSLR in the 300 range.

I looked into it and the lowest I would go is a Canon Rebel about $700 I decide to stick with my point and shoot. ebay is great but be careful, lots of grey market and b stock, for the money you want to spend look for 2nd hand, you should be right in there

What about the new Sony Alpha? Not very expensive and you get to use the really cool Zeiss lenses.

$600-700 for the alpha.
You won't find a real, interchangeable SLR for under $1000 with the lenses. Best bet is to find a "SLR-like" camera that has good optics. But you are stretching it at the low end there. There are some normal point-and-shoots that have very good optics. My Ricoh point-shoot has an AMAZING macro mode... I can focus to under 1/2" from the object. |

I've been told that getting a cheaper body and getting great lenses is the way to go, vs. getting an expensive body and getting cheap lenses. That's why I think getting the Alpha ($608 on Amazon) and a good Zeiss lens makes sense. Also, they make a great Zeiss macro lens, perfect for us reefers.

As far as getting a cheaper body, they may have been true back in the film days, but now you have a computer in your camera, and having a cheap computer isn't always the best idea.
Why do you want an SLR? That is a question you should ask yourself. Canon just came out with the 40D which means there might be people unloading the previous models. 30d, 20d and 10d. The 20 and 10 might be affordable, but the lens might put a big dent in your budget. Best. Mark |
