A six or eight line wrasse is reef safe. I think a Scott's Fairy wrasse is also okay. The first two I mentioned, for sure. If you go on www.liveaquaria.com you can get the list of reef safe wrasses.

there are several. There are the spotted wrasse. They are beautifull. be cautious with a sixline. Put it in last., if not it will terrorize any other wrasse you put in after it. I have tried to put 6 wrasse into my tank and they have all been killed by thte sixline. I wish I could catch it

Flasher wrasses are reef/invert safe, too. There are an awful lot of wrasses out there, so make sure you know exactly what you're buying before you bring it home.

I was under the impression from my LFS that wrasses were going to eat my crabs and shrimp. I didn't ask them this question but everytime I saw one I liked I asked them and they said you don't want that one.

Thanks For your help if there are others please let me know. The wrass familly is so large it is hard to read about all of them.

Roger

banana wrasse (coris). if you buy them small, they're great. mine's grown two inches in a 3 months. sixlines and other flasher/fairy wrasses work as well.

All of the wrasses will eat small hermits. But the Fairy Wrasses leave ornamental shrimp (cleaner, peppermint, blood, coral banded) alone in my experience. Of the lined wrasses, I like the 4-line the best, but all the lined wrasses are territorial pains in the butt.

i think there's less of a problem with territoriality if the lined wrasses are added later on after most of the other fish. none of my wrasses has ever touched any of my hermit crabs.

In my experience yes, but they won't just go and wipe out the whole colony. They'll just pick one off here and there when they get too hungry. Like if you have an algae outbreak and you decide to cut back your feeding... haha!

*knock on wood*

So far my six line wrasse hasn't touched any crabs, snails, or shrimp .. that I know of anyways

From reading various posts here at RC and watching my wrasses behavior, I can tell you that they are not easy fish to catch when you decide you want to pull him out. The last thread I read regarding catching a wrasse involved a) lots of time, and b) lots of beer.

Flasher wrasses, fairy wrasses and wrasses from the psuedocheilinus family are all reef safe and will not eat hermits, snails, shrimp or corals.

Any wrasse from these groups would make an excellent choice for a reef tank. Popular cadidates are: sixline, mystery, carpenter flasher, filamented flasher, lubbocks fairy, lineatus fairy, yellow fin fairy or mcCosker's flasher.

You can find some more info on wrasses here: http://www.saltcorner.com/sections/zoo/wrasses.htm
