is this a clam, and what kind?
I started up this little pico reef a couple months ago and noticed this weird disc shaped protrusion from one of the live rocks and never thought anything of it.. I thought if it was something, it'd be dead. A while later, all sorts of hitchhikers came out and sprang to life. Mostly feather dusters. Just recently though I began to notice that the little disc shaped protrusion was darker sometimes and if you looked very closely, it had little parts that pulsated apparently from between sides of the protrusion.
Obviously I'm pretty sure this is a clam. It's so small and the shell is so thin that it's translucent. Here are some pics of it, one from above and one from the side. The pics are kinda blurry because i didn't bother taking them with the polarizing filter or cleaning the glass. TOP: SIDE: I'm not sure if it's big enough to identify what type of clam it is. But the "fleshy" parts seem to be purple. |

could be, it's so tiny though. Can't find any pictures of a clam or mussel in that period of development. Do mussels have a purple fleshy part that seems to line the entire opening of their shells, leaving a void apparently in between. I guess i just neend to wait and see what it looks like when it grows more. mussel or not, it seems to be doing fine in the tiny pico tank.

I doubt it's a clam but in the family just a neat part of the tank but shouldn't ever have any colorful mantle.
