I turn off return pump for Apinun to take this shot.
That's why water level is down.
Just for a while is okay for SPS. But not too long.

you say it is ok for awhile, but not too long, how long is too long? 5 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, ... ?

For my humble experience, 30 minutes is okay.

In the wild, SPS corals are often exposed and completely out of water during low tide for hours (4-6 hours at times). I don't think 60 minutes will be a problem.

It depends on the ambient temp that the SPS exposed to. My entire tank sits in a non-conditioning garage (inwall tank) so the garage temperature can be >95-100F+ in the summer and <60F in the winter. During these extreme hot and cold weather, I wouldn't let my SPS exposed above the water for more than 30 mins. Especially in the summer time, you also have to think about the EXTRA heat from all the metal halide bulbs (5 on mine) that the exposed corals have to handle.
When I have my tank inside the house back then where amb temp is ~80F, I can leave the SPS exposed for 1 hr with no problem..

Another factor: some SPS can't handle the 'dried' temp as well as others, eg. monti cap, birdnest, deep water... while tables, staghorns.. can handle that better - JMO

and to add to this..

the slime SPS produce is a protective measure when exposed to air. It protects the polyps from drying out.

This slime is also a protective measure for when the coral senses a change in water. for example.. no flow.

Hi Chingchai, I have been reading this thread for quite a long time. This is the best tank I've seen ever. I'm from Thailand but live in the US. Do you live in BKK? I'm going back to BKK this Nov for 10 days and wondering if I would be able to visit you and your tank if you don't mind. I & my husband also have a reef set up here but it's not as great as yours. By the way, I haven't introduced myself yet, my name is Patporn but everyone here call me Sonya. I have to say again that your work on this reef set up is fantastic, I & my husband just love it.

That's what I guess when I first saw those pictures you posted how you got your tank set up and everything. I saw those cars and the building surrounded it. That must be some what close/near to china town. That would be awesome. Now i'm very excited. I'll definitely have to arrange my time. The big question is where in china town and how to get there. I live at Soi Soonvijai near Bangkok Hospital. If my brain still working i might be able to locate where china town is but to get to your place is going to be a challenge. I will need a direction. It's still 3 months away yet so if this is ok I would like to get your contact info far as email address and phone number so when it's closer I can contact you again. You can private message me if you'd like. Thank you very much.
