Angry tang caught by clam!?!?!?!?!?!?!

ok, so im sitting here at my desk which is right next to my tank. all fish are swimming around as normal. next thing i see my yellow tang has its beak caught inside the clam!!! so i hurried to get something to pry open the clam with, so i got a butter knife and gently pried the clam open enough to get the fish out. now the yellow is swimming around as normal but it seems like his face is smashed! his beak is rather elongated looking and he has the indentations around where the shell of the clam was squeezing. he seems to be fine for now. anyone heard of this before??? i find it to be rather bizarre to say the least. i should have taken a picture while he was caught, but i was really worried for the sake of my tang.

This is not unheard of. Most people loose their fish. Make sure you monitor how the tang responds to feeding for the next little while. If he's eating, he should be ok, if not ... the outlook is bad.

i threw some cyclopeeze in there right after it happened, and he was eating just as normal. however im having a hard time getting a good look at whether or not he can open and close his mouth. im about to put some algae on his clip to see how he fares. he really seems fine though... thanks!

This happened to an Emperor Angel a while back.. I don't think the angel made it judging from the photos. Keep an eye on that tang. Hopefully its mouth isn't too damaged to the point where it isn't able to eat anymore.

[Edit] Ah good to hear it's been able to eat a bit!

well he ripped it to shreds as normal. i am sure glad i was here when it happened. i could just imagine coming home to see my dead yellow in the mouth of my clam! it was actually funny to see, the yellow was spooked. well i will continue to watch him.

That's what happens to bad fish when they mess with the clams.

I think the Yellow will be fine, doesn't look like any significant injury other than a slight indention. Just keep an eye on him to ensure he is eating.

this morning the yellow is still doing fine. he does appear to have a bruise on the tip of his beak, just over his mouth. he is also still eating!
