Bulb replacement time, what should I go with?

180g SPS tank
two dual 250w magnetic PFO ballasts
4 halides in LA3 reflectors

started the tank off 2 years ago with XM 10k's but they were too intense, the lighting cycle was only like 5-6 hours to keep from burning the corals.

switched to XM 20k's and the color is good but the growth slowed way down.

what is a good bulb for growth/color that runs well on magnetic ballasts, i have been out of the loop for a while on the bulb talk so i thought i'd post to see.

thanks!

10k reeflux all the way IMO. It is a really nice looking bulb and the corals really seem to respond to it with both color and growth!

I like the Ushio 10K w/ supplemental VHO. The light is too yellow if you dont blue it up with VHO bulbs. My setup is 2X175@10K Ushio w/ 2X110w VHO: 1 actinic 03, one 10K

Make sure you see a RL10k prior to buying a set. They do make corals "pop" and growth is good. But the overall color of the tank takes some getting used to and I never could and ended up replacing them. The RL12k's are a good compromise IMO. Good coral color, overall tank appearance, but growth does take a slight hit. I run 250 watt SE Helios 20k on an M80 ballast over my frag tank and like the color. Growth is mediocre to fair. I run 400 watt SE Helios 20k on E-ballasts over my display and growth is much better in 400 watt version. It is not blue like a typical 20k.

Per Sanjay's site
M58 (magnatek) ballast
RL10k= 70 PPFD
RL12k= 45 PPFD
Radium = 80 PPFD (on HQI M80 ballast)
Helios 20k= 77 PPFD (DE on Ice Cap e-ballast)

Reeflux 10k on various ballasts-
Blueline e ballast= 82 PPFD / 14953 CCT
EVC e ballast= 90 PPFD / 10118 CCT
Ice Cap e ballast= 86 PPFD / 15593 CCT
PFO M80 HQI= 113 PPFD / 10093 CCT
Reef Fanatic e ballast= 94 PPFD / 12242 CCT

All that being said, IMHO bulb choice is still very much a personal preferrence. What do you have for supplementation, etc.

My order of preference with my E-ballasts (400 watt SE versions)
Helios 20k
Reeflux 12k
AquaConnect 14k's

I have never seen, but supposed to be very nice
BLV 14k's

HTH some.

You have very limited chose here with the Magnetic ballast .
You need to stay with the 20k XM they are your best chose with the ballast you have ..
All the bulb that everyone tell you to use they have terrible output with the mag ballast.

Re: Re: Bulb replacement time, what should I go with?

Note: This is a magnetic probe start ballast. It will work with most single ended 250 metal halide bulbs. It will not work with Ushios, Megachrome, Aqualine or double ended bulbs.

just found that online about my ballast, so i guess the Ushio's are out...

i do not believe that the 20k XM is my best choice they have 1/2 the PAR as other bulbs on the same ballast, I ran 10k's however they were intense to the point of burning the corals which is why I switched to 20's in the first place, but they are too blue and I lost more growth than I wanted to, now I am looking for a good bulb in the middle of color and growth.

The Ushio 250w, UHI-S250AQ/10/CWA, is compatible with your probe-start ballast. Spec-sheet for Ushio’s Aqualite lamps can be found here.

ichthyman- thank you, i was able to get that cleared up earlier, their spec sheet is a bit confusing and i was overlooking the fact that the 10k Aqualite would fire on the probe start.
