Engine 7, Just my opinion that if you do not use any mechanical filtration their is more surface active material that remains in water so while this helps corals etc., it also increases skimmer performance and reduces the amount of detritus I have to syphon. The increase skimmer performance was enough to help remove my trace of phosphate. I have zero phosphate and do not use chemical filter media or phosban. A secondary benefit is I do not have to deal with cleaning socks every few days or buying new ones.
