Orange Spotted Watchman Goby (Gobiidae)
Country: United States
Years in captivity: January to July - 2007
Alive/Dead: Dead
Notes: I have a 65g run EcoSystem method with a 35g bio refug. The tank has a lot of live rock and live sand about 2 inches deep as recommended by Leng. This Goby sifted sand all day and even ate some Mysis shrimp but it still did not stop the slow starvation of this fish. It finally succumbed to malnutrition just today. I thought it would have done fine in a tank like this...very sad indeed. I won't purchase a fish like this again.

Country- USA
Breed - Valencienna puellaris
Years In Captivity - 1.5 yrs
Alive

This guy has had me a little worried as he is not thriving as well as my other fish, but still seems healthy. He will eat a variety of prepared foods, but has been a slow grower and is not as "fat and happy" as I would like. I guessing he was about 3" when I got him and has grown less than 1" since.

Breed - Amblygobius phalaena
Years In Captivity - 1 yr
Dead

This fish appeared to be doing great and then just stopped eating. He was around 4-4.5" long when he died.

All these are alive:
Cryptocentrus cinctus~ yellow watchman:I have a pair, since 2003.Tried to add a Randall's pistol in 2005 and the larger one killed it immediately, he did not eat it. One of mine is notably larger and has a different colored eye than the other. I believe the smaller, shyer one to be the female as I have seen her tummy quite large on more than one occasion. They will sometimes go into what I like to call "howler monkey mode"...they come out in tandem and threaten or display this way.
Priolepis Nocturna~ full moon/white tiger: since 2005. A delightful fish, though cryptic. Stays upside down under a large central rock and hangs out with my fire shrimp.

Elacatinus Oceanops~Blue Neon Goby: since 2006. Tank raised=ORA.

In my nano:

Trimma sp.~ Trimma goby: since 2004. Had a pair, one died but was harassed by a tailspot blenny.

Ctenogobiops Tangaroai~ Tangaroa Goby: since 2005. Awesome little fish. Shares his burrow with yellow & lavender pistol shrimp.

Dead:
Amblygobius rainfordi~Rainsford's goby
Elacatinus puncticulatus~Flamehead goby
Diademichthys lineatus~ Yellow Stripe Clingfish~ extremely hard to keep.

Removed due to sps damage~Gobiodon okinawae~ yellow clown goby

-Cryptocentrus cinctus
-Been alive in my aquarium for 2 years and then 2 years before in a friend's tank. 4 years total
-He's still alive, I expect him to die pretty soon cause hes pretty old, but he still eats and is able to hide from other fish

He hasn't ever been mated with a Pistol Shrimp

I live in Texas and have had a Cryptocentrus leptocephalus (Pink and Blue Spotted Watchman Goby) for 4 years now. The person I bought him from had him for 9 months so he'll be at least 5 years old this fall. He's quite healthy and about 5" long.

Mr. Delbeek, this sounds like a great study.

I've had a yellow watchman goby (cryptocentrus cinctus, I suppose) for four years now, raised from purchase at 1" long. It's on display in my personal tank, and is approximately 3.5" in length. It lived with a tiger shrimp for about one year.

My Rainford's Goby (Amblygobius rainfordi?) has been alive and on display for 1.5 years, now at 2" long from a purchase length of 1".

I've lived in Central Virginia, in the United States, for the entire relevant time period. I hope this information is useful for you!

Cryptocentrus cinctus
Date of Purchase: 06/10/2005
Alive to date and doing well. Has endured three tank changes along with a 6 week QT in cupramine treatment with other fish that were infected with ich. He had a pistol shrimp companion until 4 months ago. Purchased a tiger pistol shrimp a couple weeks ago for him, but even though the goby was interested in sharing his digs, the shrimp wasn't. I'm still waiting for them to hopefully pair up.

I know it's past the end of July but if you still need it:
Country: USA
Fish: Cryptocentrus Leptocephalus
Captivity: 1 Year
Size: About 5 inches
Still alive and kickin' and eating everything in sight. I fear for small children! He really is such a great addition in that he is non agressive to other fish and stays out and displays his sparkiling personality.

Here's another entry for your data, Charles:

Country: Canada

Genus/Species: Amblygobius phalaena (a female, or so I'm told)

Years in captivity: 2 years, 4 months.

Status: alive, on display, very active and healthy.

She was around ~7cm long (and visibly under-nourished) when we got her and grew about ~2-3cm longer and ~2cm wider in the first 6 months we had her. She's currently around 12cm long and has been since February so I'm assuming she's full-grown. She's a very interesting fish, so I hope your study actually reveals that A. phalaena live longer than just ~4-5 years!

Good luck with the paper!

PS I only refer to this fish as "she" because I was told by a couple of people that it "looks like" a female specimen; I'm guilty of not spending anywhere near as much time learning about our fish as I do about our corals so I have no idea if "females have less tail spots" is actually an accurate method of sexing A. phalaena.

Here is the info I can offer...

Country: USA (NORTHWEST)

Species: Two Spot Goby
(Signigobius biocellatus)

Age: Unkown but has been in my tank for about 30 days. It was about 1 1/2 inches in length when purchased.

It is alive and elusive...I see it maybe every two to three days. It currently looks healthy and as if it has grown about 1/4 inch in length.

I will keep you updated if desired.

Kris

You mean people actually pay you to write a paper on gobys? At 30 dollars each and how expensive this hobby is, who really cares?

I had a Citron Clown Goby recently, that's right, had. He died in an unfortunate tank crash. He lived for 9ish months in a 12g nano. Scientific name is Gobiodon Citrinus

Sorry but I don't really understand your question. Who said anything about being paid for this? This is for a SCIENTIFIC paper, not an article for a hobbyist magazine. Did you read the first post in this thread ... my rationale for this survey is clearly explained there.

Aside from this, as you say at the prices you people pay, I would think you would WANT to know how long your investment would live.

Aloha!
