He's still a baby, they don't get the full black coloration until they are big. Plus, the the parents are onyx. And thanks. He's getting a mate hopefully within a week or so.

since they look so much like perc's how do you tell if they are onyx?
I would want to make sure that I wasn't buying perculas instead.

Are these tank raised or wild caught?

Thanks Genin.

They are tank bred. the guy I bought em from is how I know they are onyx. Other than that I'm not sure. Unless you have seen the parents. Sorry.

Hi guys! Those are one of my babies. Parents are WC onyx. While there is never a guarantee that the babies will look like their parents, I have some that are developing nicely. They are still young at 6 months or so.

Best,
Ilham

Baby Onyx usually have much more black on them at that age. Here are some Onyn babies at about 1 inches:

All five are completely Onyx at this time. Some how, having experience how these fish developed I don't think your will turn Onyx. He is still a very nice Percula

Orion - that is usually the way mine have looked before the third bar appears - I didn't know if it was just due to the pairs I am working with or what. I do know that onyx parents do not always mean full onyx offspring (i.e. fully black dorsal fins, etc.). But I can't think of any onyx that I have run across that started out as full orange at the onset of the third bar. Guess time will tell!

Edwing - please keep us posted on the color development. It would be great to document for the reef community! Thanks!

Hi Minh. Yup, those are Rod's Onyx.

These are from WC Onyx true perculas. I am hoping they will get darker. Otherwise, I may have to start forming new pairs!

Best,
ilham

I was told that the Onyx gene in Rod's Onyx is a recessive trait. I think that is one or the reason why Rod's Onyx breed true. Rod said that his pair's offspring are 98% of the time developed to true Onyx.
I got some babies Percula breed from Rod's baby and a wild caught Onyx. They look very promising at this time but only 6 months old. They are not for sale in case anybody want to know. I only have 15 and it more like an experiment to see how they turn out.
Here is a picture of one of them. The color start to connect the three bars at this time. The guys are about 6-7 months old.

He(Elmo18) might ship, you'll have to ask him. They are very peaceful and stays close to his anemone all the time.
